Every time we take our horse out for activity it is our responsibility to ensure they are properly cooled down. In winter with dipping temperatures this step of basic care becomes even more important. With our horses sporting thick winter coats and having an increased metabolism during the colder months they are at a great risk of sweating during even light exercise. Failure to properly cool your horse down and leaving them a hot and sweaty mess will have negative impacts on your horse’s health.
Here are a few tips to help you cool down your horse effectively this winter!
Cooldown During Your Activity
Whether you are riding, driving, or having an intense groundwork session – remember to allow your horse 10 minutes of walk time at the end of your mounted or unmounted activity. Not only is this a great opportunity for you to work with your horse at the walk, but it will help your horse release the built up heat in their muscles.
Removing Any Tack
When your activity is over and you dismount, unhitch, or finish your ground training loosen the girth on your tack (saddle, harness, or surcingle) and walk for a further 5-10 minutes on the ground. Keeping your tack on for just a little longer, will help your horse adjust, and hopefully prevent any cramping in their back due to a sudden rush of cold air.
Coolers Keep Your Horses Cool
Consider investing in a cooler! When you are ready to remove your horses tack, grab your cooler and cover them up quickly. Coolers help wick moisture away from your horse enabling them to cool down and dry off far more quickly. Walk your horse for a further 5-10 minutes before returning them to their stable or turnout.
