Materials You Will Need:
Scissors
Permanent Marker
Foam (8-12” Rectangle)
Plastic Cream
Pool Noodle
Vinyl
Velcro
Fake Fur or Feathers
First Stage: Sculpt Your Horn
1) Using your Foam Rectangle, begin sculpting a cone shape.
2) Once you have achieved the basic shape, take the foam cone out to the barn and compare it to your horse to ensure it is a suitable length and size.
3) Mark a spiral pattern with your permanent marker running from the tip to the base of your cone. Begin carefully sculpting an indent with your scissors to create the famous unicorn twist.
Second Stage: Time To Plastic Coat
1) Begin painting your foam sculpted horn with a plastic coat.
2) Allow each coat to thoroughly dry before applying the next coat.
3) Continue layering until your horn is firm enough to retain its shape.
Third Stage: Time To Decorate
1) Plan your colour scheme and start painting.
2) Add extra definition to your horn with shading and highlights.
3) Glitter is always a last touch option that will really make your horse sparkle
4) Coat the horn with one final layer of clear drying plastic coat to ensure that the paint and glitter doesn’t chip or rub off.
Fourth Stage: Create Your Attachment
1) Cut a cross section of your pool noodle approximately 1½’” thick.
2) Shape your pool noodle to act as a base that you can slot your unicorn horn into. Create a flat edge on one side to ensure it sits nicely against your browband.
2) Trace an oval out on your vinyl or leather that is large enough to cover both flat sides of the shaped pool noodle while allowing for enough space in the middle of your oval to account for the browband you will be attaching it to.
3) Cut a hole smaller than the base of your horn with 4 small slits to allow some give once the horn is pushed through. Remember you can always make the hole bigger, so cut smaller to start with.
4) Place the hole over your horn and glue your vinyl or leather to the top side of the pool noodle.
5) Place the velcro on the underside of the pool noodle and the underside of the other end of the vinyl oval to create a snap.
Now all that is left is to share your creation with your beloved horse, and enjoy showing off their inner unicorn!
