It’s spring time and for a lot of equestrians it is time to pull the trailer and dust it off. With our minds focused on our exciting upcoming plans such as; the next big show, a fun trail ride with friends, or even a long awaited equestrian club meet – the last thing you want to worry about is a flat tire! Before you head out on the road check out our trailering maintenance checklist to help prevent a stressful unexpected event!
Tires
- 1) Tire Pressure – Ensure your tire pressure is correct, there are no leaks or flats
- 2) Wheel Lugs – Tighten any loose wheel lugs to the correct torque
Fluids
1) Total Fluid Check – Engine Oil, Brake Fluid, Transmission Fluid, Coolant, Power Steering Fluid, and Windshield Wiper Fluid
Hitch
- 1) Ball – Ensure your ball is the right size for your trailer hitch
- 2) Trailer Hitch – Ensure that your hitch is properly secured to the ball, and all safety chains,emergency break line, and safety pins are properly secured and adjusted.
- 3) Trailer jack – Be sure to raise your trailer jack
Brakes/Lights
- 1) Condition – Be sure to check your brakes are in good working condition on your rig/trailer
- 2) Wiring – Ensure that any wiring for the lights/breaks will not drag on the road, and that they are at an appropriate length to avoid being disconnected or damaged
- 3) Connector – Make sure you have the right connector or adapter for connecting your trailer wiring
- 4) Brake Settings – Set your brake power level to the appropriate number to accommodate your trailer and load level
- 5) Lights – Check all running lights are working including brake lights, turning signals, and hazard lights
Mirrors
1) Check your side, and rear view mirrors to make sure you have good visibility
Load
- 1) Secure Your Load – Ensure that your horses and equipment are safely secured
- 2) Load Distribution – Try and load your trailer in a way that it is as balanced as possible
Departure
- 1) Route – Be sure to check your route ahead of time for any restrictions, or road works that may slow or complicate your journey
- 2) Petrol – Ensure you start your journey with a full tank of petrol
- 3) First Aid/Breakdown Kit – Make sure that you are prepared in case of an emergency
- 4) Wheel Chocks – Be sure that you have your wheel chocks and jack stand on board
