Your mare has gone into labour and it is finally time to meet your new born foal! Having waited over 11 months for this amazing opportunity and with a young life in the balance the stakes couldn’t be higher. The first three hours of your foal’s life will include some of their biggest milestones including their first breath, first time standing, and first time feeding.
Hour One
Within seconds of being born your foal will take their first breath. It is important to ensure that the birthing sac is broken and that the airwaves are clear of any obstructions. They will typically begin lifting their head within the first five minutes and attempt to stand within 10. These first attempts will result in the foal falling, but they should be able to stand independently within the first 60 minutes.
Hour Two
The second hour of your foal’s life should be focused on gaining balance and suckling for the first time. As the foal begins to search for their mother’s milk it is not abnormal for their attempts to seem random and misplaced. This is perfectly normal and thanks to their persistence, and a guiding nudge from their mother, they are often able to find the milk without the need for human intervention.
Hour Three
By the end of the third hour your mare should have passed the entire placenta. Although messy it is alway wise to inspect the placenta to ensure it is complete for your mare’s wellbeing. If the placenta is not complete, or has not fully detached by this time it is best to contact a veterinarian. Remember it is important that you do not tamper with the placenta while it is attached to your mare as it could cause complications.
In the case of a mare and foal not meeting these milestones it is important to contact a veterinarian to ensure that both mare and foal receive any additional care they may require.
