We have all admired show-stopping jump courses. With their cut-out graphics, unique fillers, and vast array of colours it is hard not to be inspired. However, when looking to purchase jumps, the cost of wings, poles, fillers and other accessories quickly adds up.
For those of you looking for a more affordable option, the good news is that with a little bit of DIY and some basic tools you can easily make your own basic jump standards at home.
Materials and tools you will need for a pair of jump standards:
Saw
Drill with a ¼-inch bit, ½-inch spade bit and Phillips-head screwdriver
10’ 4” x 4” treated wooden post
16’ 2” x 6” treated wood board
Box of 1.5” wood screws
Pair of jump cups (with pins)
Putting it together:
Start by cutting the 10’ post in half creating two equal 5’ halves.
Next measure 18” from the bottom of each post and make a mark in the center of the post. Repeat this every 3” until you reach the top of your post.
Using the ¼” drill bit, make hole all the way through the post at each mark. Once you have drilled all of the holes use the 1/2 “ spade bit to widen each hole. It is best to grab the pin for your jump cup and check the fit for each hole as you drill.
Cut the 16’ 1” x 4” wooden board into 8 20” long planks.
Begin attaching the boards to the bottom of the post on each of the four sides. Ensure that the board is aligned neatly with both the bottom and left edge of each side of the post before securing each board with four screws.
For a more finished look you can choose to paint your standards, and slope the bracing boards to a triangular point.
Once you have finished assembling your standards be sure to test that they are safe and sturdy before introducing them to your horse’s training routine.
