As part of our new series of articles sharing some of our favorite ground pole exercises we are kicking it off with the “Box” formation.
This exercise is simple to set up and requires four poles that are laid on the ground creating a square or box shape. This pole formation is great for groundwork and under saddle making a fun addition to your training program.
Exercise 1: Walk-Halt/Trot-Halt Transitions
- Walk/Trot as you approach the box, and aim to have your horse halt inside the center of the box.
Exercise 2: Accuracy Trot Poles
- Aim for the center of the pole as you navigate through the square in a consistent gait.
Exercise 3: Practice Diagonals
- Go through the box at a diagonal, aiming to stay straight and forward.
Exercise 4: Figure of 8’s
- Use the square as the center of your figure of 8.
Exercise 5: Circle
- Pass through the square while creating a circle
